Any ideas for a Christmas vacation spot in the U.S with snow, shopping, and other fun things to do for a family with older teens. -Judy, Florida
A | A Great Christmas in NYC
Some people seek out the Currier & Ives Christmas, with snow gently falling on a small cottage in the woods. As for me, I love the excitement of New York City in the wintertime. Christmas in NYC means that the 24-hour bustle of the city is somewhat muted, but still lively, wintry, and yes — jolly. Your older teens may not care about seeing Santa at Macy’s, but they’ll have a great time at Rockefeller Center. The Rockettes are classic, and fun for all ages. Believe me, even the occasionally surly teen can’t help but get caught up in the spectacle. There are many family-friendly things to do in NYC over Christmas, but if you need a break from the urban ambiance, Central Park remains a lovely place to take that respite.
With all the great things to do in NYC over Christmas, you and your family may want to extend your stay a week. After all, what older teen wouldn’t have a great time watching the ball drop in Times Square on New Year’s Eve? And as a concerned parent, don’t worry; Times Square on New Year’s Eve is rowdy, but not anarchic. There are plenty of NYPD officers, and groups are cordoned off in separate areas. Your older teens won’t get trampled. Have a wonderful holiday season.
