Family Travel Question:
Q | Can you suggest some attractions and a nice but reasonably priced hotel in New York City?
I'd like to take my three kids and myself to New York City on Memorial Day weekend. Can you suggest some attractions and a nice but reasonably priced hotel? -Amy, MA
A | Attraction and hotel recommendations in New York City
We just returned from New York City, where we had a fabulous stay at Affinia 50. A boutique hotel in the heart of Manhattan (midtown), what made Affinia 50 stand out for us was the amount of space we had (family suites include full kitchens, living spaces, and a separate bedroom), and the way it caters to families. It’s 2nd floor ‘club room’ was available to guests only, and included lounge space, flat screen TVs and video games, wines and snacks in the evenings, and family events (such as a Wii Sports Night or Movie Night) planned for various days of the week. Affinia 50 also has a full-time concierge, and extra perks in the form of themed travel kits delivered to your room (some at no charge): we choose a free ‘walking tour kit’ which included a iPod Nano (on loan) loaded with walking tours of the city, a pedometer (which the kids loved using to track our mileage through the city), guidebooks, and more. The staff was wonderful, as was the location: we could easily walk to Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and Central Park. Room rates are similar to other Manhattan hotels, but you get much more ‘bang for your buck’.
If you browse my ‘New York city series’ section of Pit Stops for Kids, you’ll find a number of articles on New York City attractions and destinations. Our favorites included Central Park, Ellis Island, and the various museums, but we also had a great time biking across the Brooklyn Bridge! No matter what you plan to do in the city, public transportation is a must: it’s not only the fastest and cheapest way to get around Manhattan, it’s an adventure in itself for kids!
