Family Travel Question:
Q | Which is the best Hawaiian island other than the big island for kids?
Which is the best Hawaiian Island for our 8/12 year old son? We have been to the big island and thought we might try something new. -Lori, California
A | Best Hawaiian island for kids
Each of Hawaii’s islands are unique and fun, but for a family who’s already experienced the rugged beauty and wildness of Hawaii’s Big Island, my vote would go to the island of Oahu.
Oahu literally has a little bit of something for everyone. For the beach lover, try a surfing lesson at Waikiki Beach with Waikiki Beach Services. My sons were up and surfing within a few tries.
For the history lover, spend a day at Pearl Harbor. Within the complex, you can visit the USS Arizona Memorial, take a tour of the USS Missouri, examine aircraft at the Pacific Aviation Museum, and learn about submarines at the USS Bowfin. My sons still talk about our visit – and my youngest was only six at the time!
Last, but not least, Oahu is home to both the Bishop Museum and the Polynesian Cultural Center. At both of these locations, children experience Polynesian and Hawaiian culture through hands-on activities and performances.
Hope you enjoy your trip and aloha!
