A | Best lodging in San Francisco? Around Fisherman’s Wharf says local
The best place to stay in San Francisco, especially with families, are in the Ghirardelli Square and Fisherman’s Wharf areas. There is easy access on foot or public transportation to some of my favorite sights in San Francisco and Marin county. For instance the 28 bus will take you to the Presidio and Golden Gate Park or you can catch a bus across the Golden Gate Bridge to the Headlands, or Muir woods. Don’t forget the street cars, cable cars and ferries which are also accessible from this area.
Ignore the conventional wisdom that locals stay away from the area. As a long-time resident of San Francisco, I overlook the wax museums and tacky tsotchkes and buy fresh dungeness crabs or In-and-Out burgers for a picnic in Maritime Park. The Musee Mecanique and Cost Plus Imports are other favorite stops. Being near the water and lots of green space is wonderful as well.
There are lots of hotel choices is a variety of prices ranges, but top of my list is the Fairmont Heritage Place at Ghirardelli Square which offers one-, two-, or three-bedroom apartments. The kitchen and laundry in the apartments are great for both saving money and convenience and I also love to opportunity to cook the delicious food I buy at the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market.
