Family Travel Question:

Q | What mobile phone service would you recommend for traveling in Europe?

I am traveling to England in July and may travel a little more around Europe. Rather than deal with roaming charges I would like to rent a mobile phone for the trip. Do you have any recommendations for which companies are the best and most reliable to work with? -Cagney, California

I recommend Vodafone. As the largest European mobile phone operator, they have the widest and best coverage. You can get information on Vodafone’s Ready-To-Go (pre-paid phone) options here. You should be able to pick up a phone pretty easily at any major airport in the U.K. I’ve traveled with family members (who are all EU residents) and just anecdotally, it seems that those with Vodafone service have been able to use their phones for calls and texts wherever we’ve been traveling in Europe with the least amount of service interruption and widest coverage. Vodafone operates in a long list of European countries including Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Italy, Ireland and the Netherlands–as well as the U.K.

Telefonica Europe (previously known as O2) and Orange are other popular choices. Since you’re starting in the U.K., though, Vodafone makes the most sense.
