Family Travel Question:
Q | Do you have some suggestions for a summer road trip east with three older teens?
We want to go on a family road trip heading east from Minnesota over the 4th of July holiday. We have 3 older teenagers. Do you have some great suggestions? Thanks. -Cindy, MN
A | East from Minnesota: try Chicago
One of the benefits of living in Minnesota is that we’re in the middle of things. This makes travel to the coasts a bit more difficult, but we have a large part of the United States within driving distance. You didn’t mention how many days you have or how far you’re willing to drive, but since you’re heading east, I’m going to suggest Chicago as your destination.
Chicago is one of our family’s favorite places to visit because of the wide variety of things to do there. If your family enjoys museums, visit the Field Museum, Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium, or my favorite, the Museum of Science and Industry. You could relax for a day on one of the beaches along Lake Shore Drive, or have some family fun on Navy Pier. (The Ferris Wheel there isn’t the fastest, but it certainly is high.) Get a view of the city from either the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) with its “ledges” or the slightly more affordable Hancock Tower. If your family enjoys shopping or good food, you’ll find that in Chicago as well. Take your bikes along to ride along the shoreline, or take a Segway tour of the area.
The Taste of Chicago festival runs from June 25 to July 3, 2011, so you might be able to enjoy some of that as well.
Thanks for your question, and enjoy your family getaway!
