Family Travel Question:

Q | Is it possible to visit Washington DC without renting a car?

You absolutely do not need a car to visit Washington DC, and in fact, given the traffic there, might be better off without one.

Washington DC by footWashington DC is a great family destination. In my opinion, it’s one of the best places to vacation with kids. Most of the attractions are free, and kids can enjoy various types of museums based on their interests. With close proximity of most museums in the same area, it’s easy to enjoy D.C. on foot with kids.

One of our favorite thing we did was the D.C. by Foot tour where we took a walking tour to the Washington Monument, the World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial.

Actually it’s more advisable to leave the car behind while you sightsee in the downtown area because parking is expensive and hard to come by. The metro in Washington D.C. is easy to use and covers a large area to most tourist attractions. Plus it’s a fun way for kids to explore the city.

For accommodations, there are many areas where you can stay without a car in the downtown area. However during our trip to Washing D.C. a couple years ago, we stayed just across the Potomac River in Crystal City. Our hotel was right across from the Crystal City station on the Blue and Yellow line. This area is more business-oriented but the price is lower than a downtown hotel. So it’s a great alternative to enjoy Washington D.C. on a budget.

One side note: make sure to check the parking fee in your hotel. Most hotels in the Washington D.C. area charge for parking, and the price varies from hotel to hotel. Don’t forget to include parking in your comparison when shopping around.
