Although our family prefers to take the back roads when traveling, there are times when it’s necessary to drive the interstate highways on a road trip. When we take the back roads, I have a bunch of off-the-beaten-path guidebooks I use to plan our stops. When we take the Interstates, I use The Next ExitThe Next Exit is a paperback book, issued annually, that outlines services at interstate exits. Organized by state (and within each state by Interstate highway) example listings from I-40 in Arizona include:

  • Mile Marker 235: Rest area both lanes, full facilities, phone, picnic tables, litter barrels, petwalk
  • Exit 165: AZ 64, to Williams, to Grand Canyon, gas: Texaco (8 mi), Shell/dsl (4 mi), other: KOA, lodging: Super 8 (4 mi), other: RV Ctr

The Next Exit first appeared on my radar when we bought an RV, as it lists camping-friendly stops, but it’s also been a fixture in my minivan. If I’m looking for a certain restaurant or hotel, or wondering how far off the interstate I’ll have to drive to find gas, it’s a valuable resource at a bargain price, and because it’s updated each year, I know the information is quite current. I recommend this book to find rest stops and more on I-40 and beyond.
