Family Travel Question:
Q | Any suggestions on summer holiday destinations after visiting New York?
We are starting our summer holiday in New York and going from there. Any suggestions on places to see? --Therese, Ireland
A | Great summer road trips: Vermont or Philadelphia and Washington D.C.
I hope you’re planning to spend some time in New York – there is so much to see and do that your kids will love! If you do, I recommend a visit to the Empire State Building, a ride on the Staten Island Ferry (it’s free and you get a great view of the Statue of Liberty), and a trip to the American Museum of Natural History (don’t miss the planetarium show).
What you do from there depends on your kids’ interests. If you’ve got outdoors lovers, I recommend a drive through Western Massachusetts to Vermont, which is gorgeous in the summer. You have a variety of options in terms of what to make your home base once you are there, although with kids that age, you can’t go wrong by staying in or around Burlington, a small university city with a funky vibe, lots of great restaurants, and fun shopping. From there you can do day trips to go hiking, ride bikes, and swim in rivers and lakes.
If your family prefers history and museums, head south for Philadelphia followed by Washington D.C. (you can do this on the train from New York). In addition to the historical sites around Independence Hall in Philly be sure to visit the world’s largest television at the Comcast Center and have lunch at the Reading Terminal Market. In Washington you have all of the Smithsonian museums to visit (bonus: they’re free) as well as all of the branches of the U.S. government and the Library of Congress. Have a great trip!
