Family Travel Question:

Q | Do you have any recommendations for things to do in Florida other than theme parks?

I am traveling with my family to Florida and I would love to do something other than theme parks! Where do you suggest? This is a multi-generation trip including busy, inquisitive kids. We are wanting something other than the Orlando area, and more than just a beach as well. Thank you! - Rebecca, Wisconsin

A | It’s all about the gators

Alligator at Gatorland, FloridaTheme parks are all very well, but yes, there are other things to do in the Orlando area besides scream and laugh.  Especially if you and your family like animals.

I’ve got two recommendations for you:

The first is an alligator air boat tour in which you zoom around an undeveloped area of the Johnson River in an airport trying to find and sneak up on big bull alligators sunning themselves on the banks.  Afterward, there’s a wild animal show with an opportunity to hold a baby gator.

The second is a family friendly Orlando theme park called Gatorland.  My son and I recently visited it on a whirlwind tour of Orlando.  We hit five theme parks in three days and this was by far our favorite.  It’s very laid back and old Florida.  Beside gators (and there are lots), they’ve got snakes, cracker cattle, and the most beautiful and accessible bird sanctuary I’ve ever seen anywhere.

I’ve never been to the Space Coast (Cape Canaveral), but I hear that’s fun too.

Good luck!
