Family Travel Question:
Q | Do you think it would be a good idea to take a cruise to Mexico with kids?
We are thinking about taking a crusie to Mexico with our kids, 8 and 5. Do you think this would be a good idea and fun for everyone, or would it be better to just go to a resort? -Candace, WA
A | Mexico: resort or cruise?
Tough question! I think it depends a lot on the nature of your kids and the offerings at the resort. It’s important to remember that every cruise line has a personality. Take a look at the ones you’re considering and make sure that the ship–not just the itinerary–that you’re choosing is a good fit for your family. I’ve enjoyed sailings on Royal Caribbean and Disney with my kids.
Resorts are the same way. You’ll have to decide, no matter which option you choose, on the things that are important to you. Do you want a kids’ club experience or would you rather they were with you throughout the day? Are you interested in sampling local culture/cuisine or prefer to stick to foods you know? The other important thing to consider is how important Mexico, as a destination, is to your vacation. In most cases a resort stay is going to give you an opportunity to wander somewhat (on foot or taxi) outside the hotel doors. On a cruise ship you’ll likely see more ports but not much of them due to time constraints and obligations to be back on the boat. I’d suggest you make a list of the things that are important to you for this trip and then measure them against the offerings in your search. Whichever you choose, bon voyage!
