Mystic Country on the southern Connecticut coast is a great long weekend getaway for young families.  For starters there are family friendly beaches like Ocean Beach in New London, which not only has sand, sun and ocean waves, but a  pool, a water slide, a spray park, a merry-go-round, nature trails, mini golf, food and ice cream!

Just down the road in Mystic, check out the beluga whales at the Mystic Aquarium. It has a lot of interactive exhibits that the toddler will love including  the hands-on  Ray Touch Pool. When it is time to run off some steam Dinosaur Place in nearby Oakdale has a dino themed playground and a splashpad water play area. If the little one is into trains take a ride on the historic Essex Steam Train.

The most relaxing way to get there from Long Island is to drive to Orient Point and take the Cross Sound car ferry to New London, CT. Drive off the boat and head right to the beach. It will take about 2.5 to 3 hours door-to-door depending on where you are starting from on Long Island. There are lots of lodging options in the area in both  New London and Mystic so you should be able to find something that works for your budget.
