Any ideas for a Christmas vacation spot in the U.S with snow, shopping, and other fun things to do for a family with older teens. -Judy, Florida
A | South Tahoe is the perfect winter playground for older teens
I’m so glad to hear you’re planning a snow-filled holiday vacation before Christmas, instead of after. The crowds will be significantly lighter, and prices will be lower. We love to travel to ski and snow destinations at this time. You don’t mention whether you’re family will be skiing or snowboarding, but with older teens, I’m guessing you will be active! I recommend several family ski towns across the United States, but for older kids, my favorite is South Tahoe, California. We spent a happy week there prior to (and during) Christmas vacation last winter, and the outdoor and retail opportunities are endless. The town is busy and certainly shopper-friendly, but you can be away from it all in just minutes (we opted to rent a home from Home Away vacation rentals). The wallet-and-family-friendly Sierra-at-Tahoe ski resort is great for all ages and levels, and if downhill skiing isn’t your thing, the whole family will love a snowmobile tour near the lake. There’s also plenty of nightlife and fun for teens in South Tahoe’s Vegas-lite ‘strip’ – just keep them away from the Roulette tables!
