Family Travel Question:
Q | How can we kill a couple of hours with our kids when we're traveling and don't want to sightsee?
Your best bet is to find parks, playgrounds, or museums.
A | Take a break from sightseeing to live like locals
Live like the locals! Ask around for local activities, street fairs, and definitely explore the library (especially if you’re in a place where a different language is spoken). Ask a local for their favorite restaurant to take their family and then spend a few hours there, enjoying the local cuisine. Find free concerts and sit in the back and listen.
Do a “photo safari”. This entails your kids using their digital cameras or video cameras to document the area around you. If you’re sitting in a park, ask your kids to find the most intriguing things about the park–the craziest outfits, the funniest moments, and any pets that look like their owners. This is also a good thing if you have to work for a few hours: ask your kids to document where you are (whether at your hotel or rental home, or at a café) in ALL aspects–inside doors, under tables, looking at the ceiling, inside the silverware drawer, the wait staff, etc. Ask them to take really close up (macro) photos of things, and then a regular photo of an object, so you can play “guess what this is?” later.
