Cruising with a babyThere are many wonderful options for vacations with small children. However, I understand first-hand how hard it can be while on vacation to try to plan things around a child’s schedule. It’s important to go with the flow and try not to schedule too many things.

My advice would be to avoid vacations where sightseeing is going to be your main focus. Consider getting a vacation rental and spending the week lounging at a beach. Vacation rentals are great options for families with small children because they are usually condos or small homes and offer most of the same conveniences of home and even separate bedrooms.

Another great idea would be going to a family-friendly resort on the beach, in the mountains, or wherever sounds fun. Family-friendly resorts cater to families with young children and can provide home comforts so you can focus on the fun. You can look into Beaches resorts or Dreams resorts. If you are interested in putting the focus on a theme-park visit, your little ones will surely enjoy that as well. Disneyland and Disney World offer great vacation options and you can even combine them with a beach vacation.

Lastly, I’m a big fan of cruises. While many may not think a cruise is an ideal family vacation, they offer many conveniences. You don’t have to worry about meals or transportation or keeping everyone occupied. There are plenty of activities on-board for kids of every age. Consider a Disney, Norwegian, or Princess cruise. It’s a great value and a fantastic way to teach your children about different cultures.

Great post! It’s so important to revisit your idea of a “good vacation” once you have kids. We did an “all inclusive” resort in Jamaica before kids and hated it – nothing wrong with the resort, but we felt trapped there and wanted to get out and explore. After kids we did an all-inclusive resort in Mexico (same basic idea) and it was the BEST EVER!!! Not having to think about food (or dishes!) was the best part, but also having the kids club and the beach and the pool and evening kids parties. It was really fantastic – and would have HATED it prekids.
