Family Travel Question:

Q | Where can we go in the Southeastern United States to beat the summer heat?

Can you suggest a place to go where we can get away from the heat? We are looking for somewhere with gorgeous views and cooler weather. -Debbie, Arkansas

A | Visit Toronto for a great getaway with cooler weather

Toronto, Centre island, FerryHead North! I may be biased, but I just so happen to think that Toronto is ideal for a great family getaway. And while the dog days of July and early August could probably have rivaled Arkansas heat-wise, as the summer winds down the days are still sunny and bright, but cooler.

And there’s just so many things to do in Toronto. In addition to the many free outdoor spaces and parks to explore, there are world-class art galleries and museums, as well as one of the world’s largest zoos. One of the greatest things about Toronto is the diversity, so you and your family can visit China, Greece, Italy, India, Poland, and Portugal, all while riding the TTC–Toronto’s oft-maligned but very safe and accessible public transportation system. For only $10 per day, a family of four can traverse the city on the TTC’s vast fleet of buses, streetcars, and subways.

So when August rolls around and the breeze picks up and sweeps away the humidity, Toronto is left with golden sunshine, blue skies, and lush trees that dot every avenue and street. One of the slogans for Toronto is “A City Within A Park” and that’s because there are over 1,460 parks in the city, including parkettes, which covers almost 20,000 acres of green space.

But if you wait a bit, October is an ideal time to visit, with sunny days that are cool and crisp, with the possibility of a turkey dinner as we Canucks celebrate our Thanksgiving.
