Family Travel Question:

Q | What are some affordable destinations in New England?

I am looking for an inexpensive place to go in August with my three-year-old twins. We want to drive so we can bail if it is a complete disaster. What are some affordable destinations around the New England/East Coast area? Also, how do sleeping arrangements work with two small twins? -Krista, CT

For a Southern California girl like me, there is something just so pleasantly surprising about  York Beach, Maine. In my mind, all of the beaches in Maine were cold, rocky, and battered by rough surf.  I could have not been more wrong!  In actuality, York Beach, located an hour north of Boston, is the town that everybody has in their mind when they imagine a family-friendly beach getaways.

Short Sands and Long Sands are the two main beaches York Beach. Short Sands is closest to downtown, which is filled with souvenir shops, casual eateries, and Goldenrod, one of the country’s first taffy shops.  York’s Wild Kingdom Zoo and Fun Park is within walking distance of the beach and has animals on exhibit, a petting zoo, and kiddie rides.

Families traveling with small children will find the privacy, living space, and a kitchen that comes along with a beach cottage the ideal place to stay in York Beach.  While two bedrooms are ideal, we found one bedroom to be sufficient since we kept our children in portable cribs when we traveled until they were four years old.  Now that they are older, we will have them sleep together on  a pull-out couch or extra bed.
