Family Travel Question:
Q | How can we make sure drinking water in Mexico is safe for our toddler?
We will be spending 10 days in Yucatan soon, our first trip with our 14-month-old to a place where we can't drink tap water. Will he be OK to drink local milk or have yogurt and cheese? Is it OK for him to drink bottled water for 10 days or should I take purification tables? Any other advice to avoid him getting an upset tummy? -Hannah, California

Once your baby is onto table foods, traveling with him or her gets a lot easier, and harder…
You no longer have to lug along jars of baby food, or figure out how to sterilize bottles in a hotel room, but you do have to be concerned that your baby is getting enough to eat and drink, and that what he or she eats and drinks is safe.
In most of Mexico, and certainly the developed parts that tourists stay in, dairy products are pasteurized, and safe for all of us to consume. As at home, your main concern should be the safe storage and handling of foods that can spoil–like dairy products.
A lot of large resorts have their own water purification systems installed, but you are safer by sticking to bottled water (which is perfectly fine). Even if the water is potable, there may be micro-organisms that can throw your (or your baby’s) system out of whack. Be sure to stick to bottled water for tooth brushing and for washing any fruits and vegetables.
If you’re overly concerned or have a particularly sensitive system, you can follow the old Peace Corps saying: “If you can’t peel it or heat it, don’t eat it.”
Mexico with kids is a great idea! In Merida, there’s a big Walmart – makes your life easy when you need to pick up stuff for baby.
