Family Travel Question:
Q | I’m flying with my baby for the first time. What if everyone on the plane hates me?
First of all, even if your baby screams from start to finish, not everyone on the plane will hate you. Secondly, your baby probably will not scream start to finish. Third, this too shall pass.
A | You can fly alone with your baby
Flying with a baby for the first time can be very stressful and it’s always easier to fly with someone who can help you get through security and can be there as a support system. But if you are flying alone, it’s completely doable and you shouldn’t be too stressed out about it. People love to help parents of babies out and if they see you struggling with your bag, they are more often than not quick to offer a helping hand.
Rest assured also that not everyone on the plane will hate you. Even if your baby cries nonstop from start to finish. Sure, some people will be annoyed and may even make some rude comments. But there will be more people who will be sympathetic to your situation. These people will be grandmas, those who have small children of their own, or people who just understand how frustrating it can be. Hang in there! Just relax and know that in the end you will reach your destination and likely never see these people again.
And it’s most likely that your baby will be fine. He or she may cry for a little but it’s unlikely they will cry for the entire time. Just be responsive to his or her needs and make sure he or she is fed, freshly changed and entertained. I have been on over 100 flights in the past 2 years and I don’t remember a single flight where a baby cried the entire time.
